What is the hiring process for a Detention Officer?
  1. Complete and submit York County government online application.
  2. Once approved, will be invited to Pre-Employment Testing.
  3. Complete Part I of York County Sheriff’s Office Personal History Statement (to be submitted at testing).
  4. Entry-level testing (TABE, spelling, general law enforcement knowledge).
  5. Evaluation of testing requirements and standards (review of scores, etc.).
  6. Extensive background investigation.
  7. Initial formal interview.
  8. Possible follow-up interview.
  9. Conditional Offer interview with member of the Command Staff.
  10. Complete Part II of York County Sheriff’s Office Personal History Statement (completed at Conditional Offer interview).
  11. Polygraph examination.
  12. Complete medical examination (Not required for non-sworn personnel).
  13. Complete drug screening.
  14. Extension to hire.

You must provide a copy of your:

  • DD-214 (if applicable)
  • Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma
  • Recent Photograph at the Time of Application
  • Social Security Card
