YORK COUNTY, SC - At approximately 9:00 AM Dec. 6 2018, YCSO Deputies attempted to stop a car on Hwy 21 in Fort Mill. Numerous witnesses called in and said the car was driving erratically and tried to pass an 18-wheeler truck on a double yellow line. The responding Deputy stopped the car on Hwy 21 at Springfield Parkway. As the Deputy approached the car the driver sped off down Springfield Parkway.
The driver of the car drove off the road and crashed into a tree at Springfield Elementary School. The Fort Mill School District was notified and the school was placed on a preventative lock down by school administrators, which was lifted a short time later.
The 28-year-old driver Diamond Barrett was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. She will be charged with Driving Under the Influence, Driving Under Suspension, Open Container in a Vehicle and Failure to Stop for Blue Lights.
"This woman’s behavior posed a significant danger and risk to those in the community and needed to be stopped," said Sheriff Kevin Tolson. "We are very thankful that no one else other than this woman was injured."
