YORK COUNTY, SC - On November 17th, 2017, a Mr. Savien Dula, assisted law enforcement while at the scene of a vehicle collision, in Rock Hill, SC. The vehicle involved in the collision went off the road, overturned and careened down an embankment into a creek, leaving the vehicle submerged in depths ranging from ½ foot of water to over 1 ½ feet of water. Mr. Dula, without hesitation, made his way down to the creek and assisted the driver of the vehicle and leaving the driver entrapped. As first responders made their way to the vehicle, Mr. Dula, all the while appearing to be calm and composed, utilized his pocket knife to cut the seat belt away from the driver of the vehicle, whereas the belt was restricting the driver’s mobility. As time passed, Mr. Dula and first responders were able to free the driver from the vehicle. Per Sgt. Gonzales, Mr. Dula’s performance in regards to the incident should be commended and admired by others, all the while serving as a reminder of the quality of remarkable citizens that reside in RH and York County. Per Sgt. Gonzales, Mr. Dula acted without hesitation and willingly placed himself in harm’s way to help another individual, of which he didn’t know. Sgt. Gonzales called Mr. Dula’s act ‘an act of heroism for all to admire’.
On June 21, 2018, Sheriff Kevin Tolson awarded Mr. Savien Dula with a Civilian Commendation for his quick thinking and heroism.
