SLED investigating in custody death of inmate at York County Detention Center
YORK COUNTY, SC – On May 18, 2018 at approximately 7:00 PM York County Detention Officers discovered an inmate in his cell unresponsive. Immediately, Emergency Medical Services were called to the Detention Center and Detention Officers performed CPR and first aid; however, the inmate was not able to be resuscitated.
The inmate’s name is not being released until next of kin is notified by the York County Coroner’s Office.
The inmate was charged by the Rock Hill Police Department and transported to the YCDC on Tuesday May 15, 2018. The 38-year-old male was being held on charges of shoplifting, possession of marijuana, and possession of contraband in a jail at Rock Hill Police before being transported to the YCDC.
It is normal procedure when there is an in-house inmate death that the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has be called in to investigate.
