YORK COUNTY, SC - The phrase “see something, say something” by a quick-acting citizen helped deputies make an arrest Friday morning for Operation Diamondback. At 4:49 a.m. on Gennet Cir. in Fort Mill a neighbor spotted four people in the apartment complex parking lot looking into cars. The caller told 9-1-1 dispatchers the group were carrying flashlights, screw drivers, and backpacks.
When deputies arrived, the group tried to speed off in the car they were driving. When they stopped 3 of them ran into the woods and one was taken into custody. Desane Sinsere Washington, 18, of Summerton, SC pulled away and ran from the arresting deputies, but was quickly re-apprehended. YCSO K-9 tracked the others, but it is believed the three others were picked up in a car by an accomplice.
Desane Washington has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, unlawful carrying of a handgun, and failure to stop for blue lights.
From the one arrest we recovered a stolen Dodge Charger, and recovered two firearms. The case is still under investigation.
Operation Diamondback is a summer long crime suppression campaign to take a more proactive approach to stopping breaking and entering of cars and vehicle theft in York County. So far Operation Diamondback has made 15 arrests and recovered 30 stolen cars.
