YORK COUNTY, SC – There have been many firsts in Amanda Carter's life, and now she can add one more honor to the list. On June 12, 2023 the South Carolina Association of School Resource Officers honored retired York County Sheriff’s Detective Carter as the first African-American School Resource Officer in South Carolina. The President’s Award was given to her at the SCASRO training conference in Myrtle Beach, SC.

“I had no clue I was the first until the President of the association told me,” said Carter.

Carter was also the first female African-American deputy at the YCSO when she began her career in 1997. Carter became the SRO at Clover Junior High (middle school) in 1998 and served until 1999 when she was promoted to Detective. This promotion also made her the first black female detective at the YCSO.

Carter retired from the YCSO in 2021 after nearly 24 years of service. Recently she returned to work part-time at the YCSO in the sex-offender registry unit.
