YORK COUNTY, SC – While college basketball teams were competing to win tournaments, the York County Sheriff’s Office succeeded in the first round Operation March Madness. In a directed saturation patrol along Carowinds Blvd. in Fort Mill, SC, Deputies and South Carolina State Troopers made 19 arrests, along with dozens of other charges.

Sheriff Kevin Tolson dubbed the campaign to get tough on crime in the Carowinds Blvd. corridor of Fort Mill as Operation March Madness. The first coordinated enforcement patrol took place in the late evening and early morning hours of March 10th to 12th.

“This is just the first of many operations to proactively deter crime here and around York County,” said Sheriff Tolson. “Carowinds Blvd. is the first impression many visitors have of South Carolina, and the citizens of York county are tired of the crime committed at the front door of our community.”

The 19 arrests include:

  • Possession of Fentanyl.
  • Unlawful Conduct of Helpless Person / Child.
  • Possession of Crack Cocaine.
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana.
  • Unlawful Carry of Pistol.
  • Driving Under the Influence.
  • One person wanted on a felony warrant by the YCSO.
  • One person wanted out of Spartanburg County.

Deputies issued 60 warnings and 34 citations for various traffic offenses.

This is the first of crime prevention operations for the month of March and throughout the year. The South Carolina Highway Patrol, and York County Department of Public Safety Communications also assisted with this operation. Additional charges and arrests may be pending.
