YORK COUNTY, SC - Sheriff Kevin Tolson has released the in-car dash camera video of an officer involved shooting.  On September 14, 2022 YCSO deputies pursued a vehicle reported stolen out of Charlotte, NC.  The 24-minute chase ended at the CVS store on South Cherry Rd. and Charlotte Ave. in Rock Hill. When Sr. Deputy Korey Wedow got out of his car to confront the driver of the stolen car, that driver rammed the blue Hyundai into Deputy Wedow's car.  At that point Wedow fired three shots from his fire arm striking the driver.  The suspect was identified by York County Coroner Sabrina Gast as 25-year-old Tyshawn Malik Benjamin of Wendell, NC. Benjamin later died from his injuries.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.

This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.

The incident in York County was the 24th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2022. This is the first officer involved shooting involving the York County Sheriff’s Office this year. In 2021, there were 40 officer involved shootings in South Carolina. The York County Sheriff’s Office had one officer involved shooting last year.
