YORK COUNTY, SC - On September 17, 2020, at approximately 12:25 P.M. a York County Detention Center inmate escaped from the custody of Detention Officers. The escape took place while the inmate was being transported to the York County Detention Center from an outside facility medical appointment.

The inmate is Caleb Bland Williams, 26 years old. Immediately after the escape was reported by detention transport officers, Sheriff’s Office K-9 officers and multiple other deputies started searching the area around Highway 5 near York.  Williams was quickly apprehended on Osteen Road within 11 minutes after he escaped.  He was still wearing his leg irons, handcuffs, and detention center issued uniform.

“While we have multiple layers of security measures in place to minimize the potential and possibility of an inmate escaping from custody, human error was the primary cause of this unfortunate incident, said Sheriff Kevin Tolson. “Thankfully, with Detention staff providing quick information and the speedy response from our Deputies, we were able to swiftly put an end to this escape attempt.”

Williams was originally booked into the detention center September 15, 2020 for receiving and possession of stolen goods. Additional charges are pending.
