YORK COUNTY, SC – On September 12, 2020 at approximately 9:05 A.M. York County Deputies responded to a restaurant on South Anderson Road to meet with a pregnant woman who called 9-1-1 about a domestic violence incident. The woman told deputies she had been repeatedly hit by her boyfriend several times in the stomach and he also pointed a gun at her at a house located at 3300 Steen Circle, Rock Hill, SC.
At approximately 10:36 A.M., as deputies arrived at the home on Steen Circle one suspect identified as Darrin Montrell Cherry, 28, immediately opened fire with two hand guns at the arriving patrol car. Deputies returned fire injuring the suspect. Immediately, deputies secured the suspect and located a child in the back seat of the car Cherry was driving. The child was not injured. Deputies rendered first aid to Cherry who was taken to Piedmont Medical Center. His condition is stable.
No deputies were physically injured in the incident.
Per York County Sheriff’s Office policy, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the incident. In addition, the Deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave.
This is the first officer involved shooting for the York County Sheriff’s Office in 2020. In 2019 there was one officer involved shooting and one in 2018.
