[ARCHIVED] New Deputies to make $40,000 starting salary

YORK COUNTY, SC (YCSO NEWS) – Effective immediately the starting salary for a new Deputy at the York County Sheriff’s Office is $40,000 per year. This is an increase from $37,165.

Once hired, new recruits will receive paid training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.  After successful completion of the police academy and the agency field training program, pay will increase 2.5%.

In addition, Detention officer starting salary is now $37,500. After completion of initial probationary period, the pay increases to $38,500.00. The previous starting salary for a Detention Officer was $35,519.

“With the ever increasing challenge of recruitment and retention of good police officers, this increase will help us be competitive with other larger cities in South Carolina,” said Sheriff Kevin Tolson. 

Other additional incentives for recruiting qualified officers, a certified police officer in the state of South Carolina and based on experience and education, the starting salary can range from $42,000 to $50,000 or more. 

Currently there are 18 career openings at the York County Sheriff’s Office. The amount of open jobs is due to newly added positions in the patrol division, detention, and recent retirements.
