YORK COUNTY, SC (YCSO NEWS) York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson has requested the assistance of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division to investigate an in-custody death.
On October 21, 2019, York County Deputies responded to multiple reports of an individual acting erratically and jumping on cars in the Newport Lakes neighborhood, in the Newport area of Rock Hill, SC. When deputies arrived, they encountered this individual behaving erratically and refusing to comply with officers’ directions.
While taking the person into custody, the individual became unresponsive. Deputies administered life-saving efforts until EMS arrived. The individual was then transported to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill and was eventually pronounced deceased.
The person’s identity will be released by York County Coroner Sabrina Gast pending notification of next of kin.
This case is under investigation. It is the policy of the York County Sheriff’s Office to call SLED to investigate all in-custody deaths.
