Detention Officers will spend their first 4 weeks of Pre-Service Training in a classroom setting with the Training Division and then a minimum of 2 weeks of on the job training with a Field Training Officer on their respective shift. Each Detention Officer must complete post assignment evaluations through their Field Training Officer before they are able to work a housing unit by themselves.
Additional Training Requirements
Within 1 year, each Detention Officer must attend training for Certification (Law Enforcement Class II Certification) at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) in Columbia, South Carolina for 3 weeks.
Each Detention Officer must complete a minimum of 40 hours of training every year and re-certify every 3 years with SCCJA. Re-certification is based on completion of required in-service training each year.
