YORK COUNTY, SC – Halloween can be a great time to have fun as a family, but unfortunately there are people out there who may harm children.  For that reason on Halloween (Thursday, October 31st 2013) the York County Sheriff’s Office will have 15 extra deputies on the streets checking on and verifying the addresses of the 145 registered sex offenders in York County.

To keep kids safe during Halloween York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant asks parents to follow a few simple rules:
• Be aware of sex offenders in your area.
• Go with your children to homes – make trick or treating a family event.
• Only trick-or-treat if houses are well lit.
• Never let your kids enter homes without parent’s permission

“Halloween night can be great fun and being prepared is the first step to making sure all goes well Halloween night,” said Sheriff Bryant. “Make a plan and talk to your kids about how to stay safe.”

Parents can go to www.yorkcountysheriff.com to search for sex offenders in a neighborhood. Also people can sign up for automated email alerts, as well as find more safety tips for parents and kids.

Courtesy of Sheriff Bryant, children should be receiving a Halloween safety flier from school to bring home for parents to review these and other Halloween safety tips.
