York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant warns of phone scams

Sheriff Bruce Bryant reports that the York County Sheriff’s Office has identified a possible trend involving debt related phone scams.  On September 1, 2011 and September 2, 2011, the Sheriff’s Office received two reports of companies claiming to be CFI and Cash Advance.

The fake debt collectors call and say you will be arrested and thrown into jail unless you send money immediately to pay an outstanding debt.   The caller uses the name of the local sheriff’s office or police department to validate their threat of an arrest.  The amounts claimed seem to be $600 or $780.  The calls most often arrive on Friday in anticipation of government offices and banks being closed over the weekends so you can’t check out their story.  The callers use the names of real attorneys, companies and any other convincing names to validate their claim.

The goal of the scam is to scare the intended victim into sending money via Western Union, MoneyGram or to give up their bank details so that access can be gained into their account.

Do not be victims of phone scams, be alert and prior to giving out confidential information, verify the identity of the caller; hang up immediately if you suspect that the call is a scam.
