On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, officials at the Oakridge Middle School notified the York County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer that three students were acting abnormally; the students were very sleepy and unsteady on their feet.
The School Resource Officer initiated an investigation and determined that a 14 year-old male student had been supplied with, what is believed to be, the prescription drug Klonopin. The student was provided with the pills for re-sell to other students. The investigation showed that the student had received the Klonopin from an adult, Christopher Marc Veurink.
At this time, the investigation shows that 4 middle school students did receive Klonopin from the student who was re-selling the pills; two pills were recovered from students. During the investigation it was discovered that the student who had distributed the narcotics had also stolen money from a teacher, the money was recovered and returned to the teacher.
Due to the investigation, 38 years-old Christopher Marc Veurink of Autumn Leaf Lane, Lake Wylie, South Carolina was arrested and charged with Distribution of Klonopin to a Person Under 18, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, Distribution of Klonopin and Conspiracy to Distribute Klonopin. The student who originally distributed the pills to other students was taken into custody and will be petitioned in Family Court with Distribution of Controlled Substance, Conspiracy to Distribute Klonopin and Petty Larceny.
Parents of three of the students involved did seek medical attention for their children as a precautionary measure. A quick response by the officials and staff at Oakridge Middle School, the York County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer and the York County Multijurisdictional Unit contributed to a quick resolution of this incident
