Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday February 28, 2010, a pedestrian was struck by a patrol vehicle driven by an on-duty York County Sheriff's Office deputy. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the York County Coroner’s Office. The deputy was not physically injured in the accident. The accident occurred in the 1400 block of Heckle Boulevard in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

  The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the accident. The Sheriff's Office is cooperating with the investigation; the Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal investigation into the accident.

 Per York County Sheriff’s Office policy, the deputy involved in this accident is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
