Within the York County Sheriff’s Office, the Undersheriff reports directly to the Sheriff and assists the Sheriff with supervising the day-to-day operations of the York County Sheriff’s Office including the Enforcement Division and the Detention Division. Major Robert J. Hudgins has served as the Undersheriff to Sheriff Bruce M. Bryant since 2005.
Major Hudgins began his law enforcement career, almost 30 years ago, with the Lancaster Police Department in Lancaster, South Carolina. There he served first in telecommunications and later as a patrol officer.
For the past 28 years, Major Hudgins has been a member of the York County Sheriff’s Office. Prior to his current position as Undersheriff, he served as Captain of Administrative Services, Detective Division Lieutenant, Detective Sergeant, and as a uniformed deputy in both the Patrol and Warrant Units of the Sheriff’s Office.
Major Hudgins is a 1974 graduate of the Rock Hill High School and a 1982 graduate of the Nazarene Bible College, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1996, he received a Criminal Justice Degree from the University of South Carolina.
Major Hudgins has completed a variety of specialized and advanced law enforcement training. He graduated, with honors, from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in 1984. He studied homicide investigation at the Sothern Police Institute, he received Instructor Certification from the National Institute of Ethics and he completed the Executive Development Course of the National Center for Rural Law Enforcement. Major Hudgins graduated from the 176th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy, Quantico, Virginia.
He is a member of the FBI national Academy Associates, the Police Futurist International, the National Internal Affairs Investigators Association, the International Association of Ethics Trainers and the Southern Police Institute Alumni Association.
Major Hudgins is married with two children and is an active member and small group leader/teacher at Carolinas Cornerstone Church in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Major Hudgins currently serves on the Board of Directors for York County All on Board, a program to prevent underage substance abuse. He is a member of the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce and a 2001 graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership York County program. Previously, he served on the Red Cross Youth Advisory Council, the Rock Hill High School Improvement Council and the Board of Directors for Keystone Substance Abuse Services.
